On Saturday (27th April) the U14 lads travelled out to Tuam in an away fixture with Tuam Celtic FC. With four lads not available due to FEILE game clashes this was always going to be a tough one for the squad. When the lads arrived in Tuam on what seemed a lovely fine day they were faced with strong winds which were to prove difficult conditions for the lads to cope with. While playing with a strong swirling wind on their backs in the first half the Devon lads were never able to take advantage and found it extremely challenging to keep the back on the ground and most of the play seemed to be played in the air. While controlling most of the better open play during the first half the Devon lads could not find the onion net and several close effort shots seemed to go either one side of the post or over the bar. It was going to be one of those days one felt. Despite wasting a number of guilt edge opportunities the Devon lads got their reward about 5 minutes from half time when one of their better moves carved open the Tuam defense for Caden Grant to score at close range. With the Devon lads one nil up it seemed that this was the wake up call to kick on and finish out the game. This was not to be and the strong wind would prove very difficult for the lads in the second half with Tuam Celtic having the advantage of the wind on their backs. Early into the second half Tuam got a free on the edge of the 18 yard box, despite four devon lads facing the kick, the Tuam Celtic free taker hit a screamer over the wall which bulleted to the net giving the Devon Keeper no chance.

This was a major setback for the Devon lads as it seemed to zap their confidence, tired bodies after 7 games from the previous Saturday (6 in Manchester Tournament and one midweek game) seemed to take its toll and the energy in the team seemed absent on the day. The second half becamef a real dog fight and in fairness to Tuam Celtic they put it up to the Devon lads with some super defense play. Similar to the first half the Devon lads created enough opportunities to win the game but nothing they seemed to do would find the net. In the end it finished a draw, which was rightly celebrated by the Tuam lads, while in contrast the Devon lads were totally shell shocked, particularly on how this game didn't finish with a comfortable win. Unfortunately that is football and nothing is certain on the day
