The Salthill Devon U12 A’s progressed to the last 16 of the Connaught cup in an entertaining game played out last Saturday in Drom against AC Celtic from Athlone.

The Devon lads started brightly dominating both possession and chances in the first 10 minutes but couldn’t convert any of their opportunities into goals. They were made to pay for this early in the first half when the AC Celtic number 7 took advantage of a mix up at the back for Salthill to slot home the opening goal. Fair play to the Salthill team they never panicked, staying calm, retaining possession and continuing to carve out chances. Finally Salthill opened their account when for the second game in a row Sam Finneran tucked the ball into the corner leveling the scores. A combination of good defense and some superb goalkeeping from Celtic ensured the sides remained level at time.

The second half started like the first with Salthill well on top but again failing to take their chances. It was starting to look like one of those days when up popped Thomas D’Arcy to volley home from a David Kilraine cross. Typical, you wait hours for a bus then two come along at once. Five minutes later D’Arcy repeated the trick again volleying home via the underside of the AC Celtic crossbar. Kilraine added the cherry on top of a fine Salthill performance heading home superbly from a fine Finneran cross. Final score was 4 – 1 to Salthill Devon.

A big thanks to the AC Celtic team who kept battling until the end. A shortage of numbers due to injury meant the Athlone side were unable to make any substitutions which proved costly in the end. Thanks also to the match ref Mary Comerford for officiating so well. Finally big thanks to all the parents who provided sambos and treats for after the game, very much appreciated by all.
