Salthill Devon’s U16 Premier League team returned to the top of the table as they came from behind to defeat their cross town rivals, Mervue Utd, 3-2 in a thrilling encounter. Devon were 1-0 down at half-time and also missing 3 regulars, however, they put in a spirited performance in the 2nd half and took all 3 points through goals from Daniel Cox (2) and Dominic Matei. The win takes them level on points with Colga and with 2 games on hand in a very competitive league. The management duo of Mark Brady and Bogdan Matei will be hoping they continue their winning ways on Sunday when they welcome Glenhest Rovers from Newport in Co Mayo to Drom with a place in this season’s Connacht Cup final at stake.

Nigel Diskin and Barry O Connell’s U16 Championship team drew 1-1 with Galway Hibs in an evenly fought contest while the U14 Division 1 team were defeated 3-1 to St Bernards and there were also defeats for the U12 Division 1 & 5 teams. Conor Byrne’s U11 As, playing as the U12 C team in Division 2 recorded a comfortable 6-1 win over a gallant Colga to remain unbeaten after 11 games. Goalscorers for Salthill were Thomas Burke (2), Emily Fitzgerald, Adam Lally, Tommy Lillis and a thunderous strike from Kian O Connell while James Coyle deputised admirably in goals for the absent Adam Morris.

Pat Lawless’s U16s Girls were defeated by a very strong Cregmore/Claregalway team in an exciting Galway Cup game in Drom in which both teams contributed equally to a high quality attacking game.

Shane Fitzgerald’s U12A girls continued their unbeaten league campaign with a 6 nil win away to cregmore/claregalway on Wednesday. Aoife Nash opened the scoring with a shot into the top corner. Daria Brennen added 2 more in the first half. Emily Fitzgerald scored 1 before half time and another in the 2nd half. Ellie Browne finished the scoring with a fine individual goal. Next up Moyne Villa the 11th in Drom.

Steve Stone’s U12B girls defeated Oughterard in fast paced game. The game had many shots on target stopped by a determined opposition goalkeeper. Leah Murphy’s second half goal secured a well-deserved victory for Devon’s goals. Salthill Devon keeper Francis Hardy ensured a clean sheet.

This weekend also sees John Nolan’s talented U12s seek a place in the Connacht Shield final as they welcome Sligo’s Ballisodare Utd to Drom for an eagerly anticipated tie tomorrow (Saturday) while there are multiple fixtures at each group as the leagues play catch up in an effort to finish the season on schedule.

The Nipper Academy continues training over the weekend.
